Education

On this page, you’ll find an in-depth look at my education, including GPA (where available), extracurricular activities, and links to the respective schools and institutions that I have attended.

Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Entrepreneurship Major @ Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario

From 2002 to 2007, I attended what was then called the Ryerson School of Business (Now the Rogers School of Business Management), with the goal of earning a B. Comm degree. The main reason why I chose Ryerson was for its brand-new Entrepreneurship Major, designed to be the most immersive program of its kind in Canada. At the same time, the quality of Ryerson’s elective classes allowed me to stretch my “academic legs” and gain a greater understanding of politics, environmental economics, photography, and dancing the Cha-Cha.

Diploma in Agriculture, Farm & Agribusiness Management Option @ University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba

From 1997 to 1999, I studied at the “farming school” at the University of Manitoba, and became the third person in my family to receive a Diploma in Agriculture there. Unlike Ryerson, the U. of M. School of Agriculture curriculum devoted the entire first year (and much of the second) to building a firm foundation in all of the agricultural sciences. Everything from the proper care and feeding of a cow, to the care and maintenance of a planetary tractor wheel hub, and everything in between. Even while working towards the specialization in management (i.e., farm tax accounting) a great deal of time was spent studying law, entomology, and construction.

Continuing Education Courses @ Red River College, Winnipeg, Manitoba

In late fall of 2009, I began night classes in Machining. Before I could even start the motor on my metal lathe, I discovered the hard way that I had arthritis in my hands. Despite passing the class twice (the second time to learn vertical milling), the pain in my hands wouldn’t let me continue.

Later the following spring, I returned to RRC for a different kind of lesson: an HR-based class on Assertiveness Training. Taught by a retired RCMP officer, the course taught how to effectively “put your foot down” and deal with others in the worst of situations.

High School Diploma @ Deloraine Collegiate Institute, Deloraine, Manitoba

In 1997, I graduated from high school in the small farming community of Deloraine, a fifteen mile bus ride from my hometown of Goodlands, Manitoba.

Diploma in Bartending @ Fine Art School of Bartending, Winnipeg, Manitoba

This was a two week intensive course in bartending and liquor knowledge, in the summer of 1999. The course started with the basics of how to properly use bartending tools, and worked its way to proper wine service. Although it was definitely the least “studious” of the schools I attended (The harshest academic penalty was buying the teacher a 6-pack of Budweiser), the diploma helped me to land several jobs in the hospitality business while I lived in England.
